WHAT IS
UROGYNECOLOGY?
Urogynecology, also known as Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS), is a subspecialty that focuses on disorders of the female pelvic floor (PFD) such as pelvic organ prolapse (bulging out of the uterus and/or vagina), urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence and constipation. Pelvic floor disorders affect the bladder, reproductive organs, and bowels.
What is a urogynecology/(FPMRS) doctor?
Doctors called urogynecologists receive special training to diagnose and treat women with pelvic floor disorders. In addition to residency training, urogynecologists are board certified in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery.
Urogynecologists help improve a woman’s quality of life by treating incontinence or prolapse issues. They can recommend a variety of therapies to cure or relieve symptoms of PFDs. Choose the one that works best for your lifestyle and meets your goals.
What is the difference between a Urologist and a Urogynecologist?
Urogynecologists complete medical school and a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology or Urology. These doctors are specialists with additional training and experience in the evaluation and treatment of conditions that affect the female pelvic organs, and the muscles and connective tissue that support the organs. Most complete fellowships (additional training after residency) that focus on the surgical and non-surgical treatment of non-cancerous gynecologic problems. This ensures standardized training in light of dealing with vaginal mesh complications.
Conditions We Treat
Pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) are a group of conditions that affect the pelvic floor. The pelvic floor includes the muscles, ligaments and connective tissue in the lowest part of the pelvis. It supports your organs, including the bowel, bladder, uterus, vagina, and rectum. The pelvic floor prevents these organs from falling down or out of your body. It also helps the organs function properly.
